I sloths in captivity may sleep more because they don’t need to forage for food or watch for predators, or just because they are bored. The result is important because many of the theories for why sleep evolved are based on studies that compare sleep in different species.
One article claimed that sloths don’t actually sleep that much at all – research has shown that on average, wild sloths only sleep for 8-10 hours a day. In comparison, the similarly sized howler monkey sleeps for 15 hours a day, while koalas will regularly clock up 20 hours!
